Prevx offers consumers protection against new, unknown or "zero-day" malware threats by using heuristics to identify behavior rather than specific signatures. The product can be used either as a standalone security application or as part of a "defense in depth" strategy alongside existing anti-virus and spyware scanners.

The software is simple in structure and principle, but is incredibly effective at eliminating the kinds of threats that a lot of signature-based products struggle to deal with. The product also provides some configuration options allowing you to specify how tight or loose you want the heuristics to be. For example you can choose to enable enhanced rootkit detection, password protect the configuration options and configure advanced heuristics, program age heuristics or heuristics by file type.

On-demand scanning is ultra fast and can usually be completed in around a minute or less on an average PC. Background scanning is equally low on resources, putting little load on the system and ensuring that daily scans don't significantly impact on your computer use.

While it doesn't quite match the performance of the very best AV and anti-spyware tools (it did score slightly lower in our tests when dealing with rootkits), Prevx is still a worthy alternative. Its heuristic approach to dealing with threats is particularly impressive and the fact that you can run it alongside other applications makes this a product well worth considering. However, it does rely on being connected to the internet for its detection and removal of some types of malware so this will be a deal breaker for people with limited data connections.
